Bollywood, the thriving Indian film industry based in Mumbai, serves as a captivating lens through which students can explore cultural diversity. While Bollywood films are renowned for their musical extravagance, our focus extends beyond the dance itself to embrace the rich cultural tapestry from which it emerges.

This program goes beyond the realm of dance, serving as a catalyst for cultural engagement, awareness, and understanding. By using Bollywood dance as a gateway, students embark on a journey of exploration and appreciation for the rich diversity that shapes our world. The accompanying teacher resources, “The World is Our Playground” Series, provide a literary foundation for deeper cultural insights, fostering a holistic approach to cultural enrichment in the educational setting.

The Facilitator –

Jamel has been teaching Bollywood Dance and Cultural Education for over 20 years locally and internationally. She has the students up and dancing, but also gives them the significance and cultural identity that comes with the workshop. It allows the children to relate it back to their own identity and helps them understand the importance and impact of learning about different cultures.

Jamel studied Classical South Indian, Barathanatium Dance since the age of 6 and has travelled to Singapore to further her studies in North Indian Kathak dance and Classical Indian vocal music and tabla. Her upbringing in Punjabi folk dance, Bhangra, and interest in modern forms of dance such as hip-hop and Latin allows her to choreograph using traditional, folk and contemporary influences.

All the children took part and responded well to Jamel. She works great with the children and is very comfortable – she was friendly, well prepared and professional, and will be recommended to others. There was great interest in having the program again.”
